Despite the fact that it was burned down by the Ottomans, occupied by German forces, and experienced a blood-filled revolution, in 1989, when Ceausescu was murdered, the city managed to "pull itself together", and, in time, has developed and modernized, today being recognized as the most important political, administrative, economic, university, cultural and touristic center in Romania, boasting a broad range of convention facilities, educational facilities, cultural venues, shopping arcades and recreational areas.
Among Bucharest's most popular attractions there are the many lakes found in its area, which are often surrounded by parks, such as Floreasca, Tei, Colentina, Cismigiu, Lacul Morii, Titan, Drumul Taberei, and Parliament's Palace, located in the city's central area, recognized as the most visited touristic destination in Romania.
However, Bucharest is not all about a few lakes and a political Palace. The city has various other attractions to offer, considered not-to-be-missed, when visiting, such as The National Art Museum, The Romanian Athenaeum, which is a symbol of the city, The Village Museum, one of the biggest and the oldest outdoors museum in Europe, or Snagov Monastery, located on a small island of Snagov Lake, one of the country's most significant historical attractions.
While visiting Bucharest, you will certainly be intrigued by the city's eclectic mixture of architecture, ranging from old monasteries to Orthodox Churches, Second Empire mansions, the impressive architecture of the communist years and the colossal Parliament House, which is the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon.
