The closest major airport is Henri Coanda International Airport - Calea Bucurestilor 224 - (21) 204 12 00 or 204 12 10, in Otopeni, about 12 miles north of downtown Bucharest.
Baneasa Airport is also nearby (6 miles from downtown - 021 232 0020 or 9713), and it is used for charter flights and scheduled low-cost flights from/to destinations in Europe.
From the airport there are connections available to downtown Bucharest, and the main train station (Gara de Nord).
Presently, the only taxi company licensed to pick-up passengers from the airport is Fly Taxi - 9411 (local). The trip from the airport to the city center is about $25. Fly Taxi's fee per km for trips from the airport is about 3.30 Lei ($1.8/mile).
Daily bus service between the airport and downtown Bucharest is available, as well, through Express Bus 783, with stops at Baneasa Airport, Piata Presei Libere, Piata Victoriei, Piata Romana, Piata Universitatii and Piata Unirii. The bus leaves every 15 minutes and the journey takes about 40 minutes. The fare is 7 Lei (about $2.5) for a round-trip ticket.
The connection between the airport and the main train station is offered by Express Bus 780 and by Henri Coanda Express Trains, which offer daily service from Balotesti (0.5 miles from the airport).
The public transportation service within the city is provided by R.A.T.B. - 021 9391, and includes bus (autobuz), tram (tramvai), trolley bus (troilebuz) and subway (Metrou).
Tickets or passes can be purchased at any kiosk displaying the RATB logo. The functioning hours for RATB is 5 am - 12 midnight.
Besides taxi or public transportation, one can also drive, ride the bike or simply walk (on short distances) to get around in Bucharest.
